Executive summary
Sawn timber and roundwood of fifteen poplar trees from Linyi County in China were preservative treated using several diffusion and pressure treatment systems. Dip diffusion treatments of sawn timber with saturated boron solutions have good results in six to eight weeks, depending on the temperature in the diffusion area. Similar treatments with round wood were not satisfactory because insufficient preservative was retained on the very smooth surface. Hot and cold bath treatment of partly dry round wood with boron, followed by three weeks in diffusion stack, gave satisfactory treatment results. Pressure/diffusion treatment of the same material was also successful. Double diffusion treatment with boron and copper, using momentary dips to apply the preservatives, gave inadequate copper retention and penetration. Air drying followed by pressure treatment with copper-chrome-arsenate preservative resulted in variable, patchy penetration, similar to that observed in poplar timber from other sources.
