Executive summary

Three sets of kiln dried rubberwood samples were treated with CCA preservative using modified Bethell processes with 15 minute and 45 minute pressure cycles.  Both treatments resulted in patchy or incomplete preservetive penetration.  The longer pressure cycle did not greatly improve preservative penetration.

Four sets of radiata pine samples were treated using modified Bethell processes with various vacuum and pressure periods, similar to those used for the rubberwood.  The percentage of heartwood in some samples significantly influenced preservative uptake and penetration.  Increasing the pressure period from 15 to 45 minutes improved penetration and uptake.

Five sets of poplar samples were treated at moisture contents from 10% to 70% using standard Bethell and APM treatment processes.  Preservative penetration was patchy in all treatments with uptake increasing as moisture content was reduced for the standard Bethell treatments.  APM treatment of samples at 70% moisture content resulted in poor penetration and uptake.
