Membership benefits

  • You can advertise timber or services in the marketplace and use the Specialty timbers New Zealand quality brand and logo;
  • You are a member of NZ's only industry body representing the interests of specialty timber producers;
  • You can participate in the Specialty Timbers NZ online community.

As an industry group we represent the interests of small producers of quality specialty timber. Some examples of where representation is needed:

  • Political lobbying. We are currently lobbying the NZ Green Building council for recognition of the environmental benefits of locally produced specialty timber in its credits scheme;
  • We are lobbying for recognition of unverified No. 1 framing timber as a structural timber within the building code and in particular NZS 3604 Timber Framed Buildings;
  • We are undertaking tests of characteristic strengths of a range of specialty timbers so these can be used as an acceptable solution under the building code;
  • We will provide representation on NZ Standards committees regarding the use of timber (such as the building code);
  • We will undertake research into new products such as thermally modified timber.

As an industry group our focus in on developing the market for specialty timber species, which we will achieve by working together and collaborating to achieve this goal. Our committee is elected voluntary representatives nominated by members. Industry people representing industry issues.

Specialty timbers New Zealand (STNZ) Inc. is an incorporated not-for-profit society and branch of the New Zealand Farm Forestry Association.
